Chelsea Fan, Segun ‘Black Arrow’ Arinze: I Can’t Wait To Drink To Our Double Win Read more

Nollywood superstar actor, Segun Arinze (aka: Black Arrow), a die hard Chelsea fan has joined millions of The Blues' fans to celebrate their qualification for the final of the Emirates FA Cup, and he tells his friends that he can't wait to drink to FA Cup and Premier League title wins.
Chelsea on Saturday evening booked their place in the final with a 4-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the first semi-final match of the competition.
Antonio Conte's team have a chance of winning double this term. They currently top the Premier League log as the race for the title enter the home stretch. And with a berth in the final of the FA Cup secured, 'Black Arrow' Arinze is itching to see his beloved team bagging the double in style.
Chelsea await the winner of the second semi.-final clash of the Emirates FA Cup between Arsenal and Manchester City holding today (Sunday), but Arinze  is not bothered by the kind of opponent The Blues will meet in the final.
"I want to have a good drink in celebration of the win. I do not worry who the opponents will be in the final. I am confident Chelsea will win the FA Cup. But the icing on the cake will be the Premier League title. I can't wait," Arinze grins!
Meanwhile, Arinze, like his fellow vociferous Chelsea fans, takes pleasure in savouring the outcome of their Saturday's FA Cup semi-final clash with Tottenham.
Eden Hazard, Willian (brace) and Nemanja Matic were on the scoresheet for Antonio Conte's men, while Harry Kane and Dele Alli scored for Spurs who are the only strong challengers to Chelses for the Premier League title.
"This match was very interesting, a great game of football and the win was even against a rival in the Premier League," he remarks.
"I must commend Tottenham. They have improved as a team, but Conte showed the depth in the squad, even starting Eden Hazard from the bench. This is heart-warming. It is a different Chelsea side that Jose Mourinho handled two years ago.
"I don't understand what Son Heung-min expected of the referee. He stopped Victor Moses for the penalty that Willian scored from. Yes, I feel the call was right," the supporting lead actor in the blockbuster movie 'Silent Night' concludes.

Sigurdsson equaliser damages Manchester united top four hope

Manchester United suffered a big blow to their top-four hopes as Swansea City held them to yet another draw at Old Trafford.
Gylfi Sigurdsson free kick cancelled out Wayne Rooney penalty to secure a 1-1 draw for Swansea City at Old Trafford that damages Manchester United’s top-four ambitions.
Rooney swept home from the spot moments before half-time after Marcus Rashford had gone to ground which was a little bit controversial with the replay showing that there was  no contact from Lukasz Fabianski, but Swansea’s set-piece maestro stole a point that could wreck the hosts’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League through domestic competition.
Swansea, who are now just two points adrift of safety in 18th place, looked the brighter of the teams for much of the first half but chances were limited before the penalty incident towards the end of the half time.

Anthony Joshua defeats Wladimir Klitschko

Britain's Anthony Joshua defeated veteran Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko in a world heavyweight title fight epic in front of 90,000 people at Wembley on Saturday, taking victory on an 11th round stoppage.
Joshua added the WBA title to his IBF belt but only after being knocked to the canvas by the 41-year-old Klitschko in the sixth round.
The Ukrainian was also sent crashing to the floor in the fifth round and twice more in the pivotal 11th as the 27-year-old British fighter took his record to 19 wins in 19 fights.
"What can I say? 19-0, three and a half years in the game. As I said, I'm not perfect but I'm trying and if you don't take part you're going to fail," said Joshua who was put on the canvas for the first time in his career.
"As boxing states, you leave your ego at the door and you respect your opponent. So a massive shout out to Wladimir Klitschko."
A third defence of his IBF world heavyweight title also earned Joshua the vacant WBA belt as he became the first British heavyweight since Lennox Lewis in 2002 to hold two versions of the world title.
It was Klitschko’s first stoppage defeat since Lamon Brewster beat him in 2004 and leaves his record at 64 wins and five defeats.
"The best man won tonight and it's a massive event for boxing," Klitschko told Sky Sports

"Two gentleman fought each other. Anthony was better today. It's really sad I didn't make it tonight."
Klitschko was trying to reclaim two of the three belts he lost to Joshua’s fellow Briton Tyson Fury by an upset on points in November 2015.
The Ukrainian had not fought since then after Fury twice pulled out of rematches and entered the ring as the underdog.
It was Joshua, after 18 straight knockouts as a professional, who was the 1/2 betting favourite and he smiled as he walked to the ring in front of Britain’s largest boxing attendance since 1939.
Klitschko could not establish his jab in the first round and it was Joshua who landed more punches, with the best being a left hook in the opening minute.
The 27-year-old began the second confidently and repeatedly found Klitschko with his jab.
The Briton missed with a big overhand right at the start of the third round but then connected with a big sledgehammer of a left hand.
After a telling off in the corner, Klitschko began the fourth full of intent and landed a couple of right hands.
But it was Joshua who started quicker in a thunderous fifth round.
The Briton wobbled Klitschko with a left before landing a series of clubbing blows, including a cracking right uppercut, which sent the Ukrainian to the canvas.
Klitschko got up but was on unsteady legs and began swinging wildly.
But the fight turned again later in the fifth when Joshua suddenly became static on the ropes after punching himself out.
Klitschko seized his moment and began to land flush as he took control of the unpredictable encounter.
In the sixth, Joshua’s early confidence had evaporated and he dropped to the canvas after being stunned by a right hand to the temple.
He was up at eight and immediately had to duck a big left from Klitschko before surviving the round.
Both fancied they could stop each other and in the latter rounds looked for the big shot.
And it was Joshua who landed it in the 11th. The champion uncorked a sweet right uppercut to snap back Klitschko’s head, followed by another right to send his opponent to the canvas.
Klitschko courageously got up but was nailed by another right and another right uppercut which dumped him back on the canvas.
Klitschko got up from the second knockdown in the round but when Joshua started to pile on the pressure referee David Fields stepped in to stop

Believe in buhari's administration, Onu urges Nigerians

New York – Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu has urged Nigerians to have confidence in the ability of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to transform Nigeria. Onu who spoke in New York on the sidelines of an Investment Forum organised by the ministry.       According to Onu, Nigeria’s future is bright. “No matter the challenges and the problems that we have in Nigeria, Nigeria has a bright future because we have intelligent people and even Americans know that Nigerians are very intelligent. “We heard that the drone which is being used to kill terrorists in Afghanistan was invented by a Nigerian. “So how can a nation, blessed with so many intelligent people not have a bright future? “So whatever the problems, just be confident and believe in this administration as it is determined to change Nigeria,” he said. The minister said the Federal Government was working assiduously to take the country away from recession to prosperity through its Economic Growth and Recovery Plan. Onu, who was the Second Republic governor of Abia, explained that the plan had Science and Technology as its base, adding that this had never happened before. “We have recognised that we would not move one foot in the right direction without Science and Technology and as Minister of Science and Technology, I am determined to help the President to transform our economy from resource-based to knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy,” he said. He blamed the recession on the failure of the country to diversify its economy since independence, noting that countries like South Korea that diversified their economy were not in recession. “Now if you diversify your economy through agriculture and you don’t pay attention to Science and Technology, you will still go back to the same problem. “There was a time Nigeria had enough rice to feed her citizens and exported rice to other countries. “Don’t forget that there was a time we were the number one exporter of palm oil to the world, but today, we are importing all these items. “So it’s because that diversification was not sustainable. You must diversify in a sustainable manner, and to make it sustainable, tt must be based all on Science and Technology so that you remain competitive. “If you are not competitive, after sometimes, your level of production will decline”. The forum was attended by many Nigerians from across the U.S., who advised the home government to carry them along in the scheme of things.

N.Korea test-fires ballistic missile in defiance of world pressure

SEOUL, April 29 (Reuters) - North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile on Saturday shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned that failure to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs could lead to "catastrophic consequences."
U.S. and South Korean officials said the test, from an area north of the North Korean capital, appeared to have failed, in what would be the North's fourth straight unsuccessful missile test since March.
The test came as the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group arrived in waters near the Korean peninsula, where it began exercises with the South Korean navy on Saturday, just minutes after the failed launch, a South Korean navy official said.
Tillerson, in a U.N. Security Council meeting on North Korea on Friday, repeated the Trumpadministration's position that all options were on the table if Pyongyang persisted with its nuclear and missile development.
"The threat of a nuclear attack on Seoul, or Tokyo, is real, and it's only a matter of time beforeNorth Korea develops the capability to strike the U.S. mainland," Tillerson said.
"Failing to act now on the most pressing security issue in the world may bring catastrophic consequences."
U.S. President Donald Trump said the launch was an affront to China, the North's sole main ally.
"North Korea disrespected the wishes of China & its highly respected President when it launched, though unsuccessfully, a missile today. Bad!," Trump said in a post on Twitter after the launch.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the U.N. meeting it was not only up to China to solve theNorth Korean problem.
"The key to solving the nuclear issue on the peninsula does not lie in the hands of the Chinese side," Wang said.
In a commentary on Saturday, China's official Xinhua news agency said both North Korea and the United States needed to tread cautiously.
"If both sides fail to make such necessary concessions, then not only will the two countries, but the whole region and the whole world end up paying a heavy price for a possible confrontation."
Trump, in an interview with Reuters on Thursday, praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping for "trying very hard" on North Korea but warned a "major, major conflict" was possible.
The North has been conducting missile and nuclear weapons related activities at an unprecedented rate and is believed to have made progress in developing intermediate-range and submarine-launched missiles.
Tension on the Korean peninsula has been high for weeks over fears the North may conduct a long-range missile test, or its sixth nuclear test, around the time of the April 15 anniversary of its state founder's birth.
JAPAN PROTESTS
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the test as a grave threat to the international order.
"I urged Russia to play a constructive role in dealing with North Korea," Abe told reporters in London. "Japan is watching how China will act in regard to North Korea."
U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the North Koreans had probably tested a medium-range missile known as a KN-17 and it appeared to have broken up within minutes of taking off.
The South Korean military said the missile reached an altitude of 71 km (44 miles) before disintegrating. It said the launch was a clear violation of U.N. resolutions and warned the Northnot to act rashly.
With North Korea acting in defiance of the pressure, the United States could conduct new naval drills and deploy more ships and aircraft in the region, a U.S. official told Reuters.
The dispatch of Carl Vinson to the waters off the Korean peninsula is a "reckless action of the war maniacs aimed at an extremely dangerous nuclear war," the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, said in a commentary on Saturday.
Inter-continental ballistic rockets will fly into the United States "if the U.S. shows any slight sign of provocation,"

Trump's first 100 days: Here's how they compare with Obama's, Bush's, and Clinton's

Franklin D. Roosevelt got more done in his first 100 days in office than any president before him or any since. He took office in the depths of the Great Depression, enacting a dizzying number of laws and signing executive orders to stabilize the economy with the New Deal.
Roosevelt is the reason people focus on the first 100 days. When presidents take office, they have the most political capital to enact their agenda. Studies have found that it's the most productive time for legislative action.
Of course, presidents don't have total control over their time in office. Ronald Reagan was shot during his first 100 days and spent the last month in the hospital. Bill Clinton's first months were distracted by the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" military policy, then the fatal raid in Waco, Texas. George W. Bush bombed Iraq, and Barack Obama had to save Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates.
Donald Trump's 100th day in office is Saturday. How has his tenure compared with that of the last three presidents?
We looked at how many executive orders they signed, how many laws they enacted, how the economy performed, where they traveled, what their approval ratings were, and, for fun, how often they golfed.

JAMB has registered over 1.5 million candidates less than 5 weeks — Oloyede

The Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, has said the smooth conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination mock examination in most centers across the country  was a good litmus test.

Oloyede, who disclosed that the Board has already registered over 1.5 million candidates for the 2017 UTME, less than five weeks into the nationwide registration exercise, insisted that the facilities put in place were good enough for hitch-free conduct of UTME proper scheduled to hold from 13th to 20th May, 2017.
He spoke on Saturday while monitoring the conduct of the UTME mock examination in some of the Computer Based Centers in Abuja. He disclosed that about 153,000 candidates sat for the mock examination in 633 examination centers across the country.
Oloyede, explained that the essence of the mock examination was to test the new technology, he said has worked perfectly as observed in many examination centers on Saturday.
The conduct of the mock examination was generally peaceful and orderly in most of the centers monitored in Abuja, with candidates who participated in the trial test commending JAMB for the initiative.
Sunday Tribune was at the Global Distance Learning Institute, Digital Bridge Institute and the JAMB Computer Based Centre, located in Bwari, where the examinations were held in Abuja.
The JAMB Registrar, who disclosed that said: “So far so good, the orderly conduct of the examination is even better than our expectation. It is a mock examination, a trial test and the examination held smoothly”.
He added that the intention was test the technology and that from all the reports across the country, it has proved to be a perfect technology.
He thanked the Service providers, MTN and Artel who partners in the conduct of the examination for “doing a very good job”.
He said from all indication, the Board was more than ready for the main examination that is expected to kick off on 13th May, and last till 20th May, 2017.
He, however, said he has discovered that some people were bent on thwarting the effort of the Board, and that such people would not be allowed to succeed.
He vowed to persecute all those caught in various infractions during the registration exercise, saying the law would not allow them to go scot-free.
The Registrar who said he was not in a position to decide if the mock examination should be an annual event, said the Board has the option of spreading subsequent UTME for over three or four months.
He said: “I think from what you have seen, we are more than ready for the main examination. We have a control room where we monitor situation from all over the country. As at when I left office, quarter to seven this morning, at least 90 percent of the centers have reported positively; proper downloading and preparation for the exams.
“And you have also seen it from our control room that even after the first session they have uploaded the responses of the students. We have received more than 80 percent as you can and we expect that the remaining 20 percent might have responded. We believe this is a very good exercise. We do not claim perfection but we believe that Nigeria deserves the best.
“And you should not be afraid of noise; any officer who wants to serve this country must know that if he does not want to take any risk then there will be no progress.
“What we have done is just that we want to show that we believe that what worked elsewhere should work here in Nigeria and we believe that we can get these things done more efficiently and without having to spend fortune.
“We believe that we have been able to try this and we will continue to do our best. So far we have registered over 1.5 million candidates in less than five weeks and we are yet to complete the fifth week of registration because we believe that the facility that we have put in place is good enough.
“You must have also noticed that some people are hell bent at thwarting the efforts of the Board but we would not allow such people to succeed. Those of them that were caught, I believe that the law would allow them to go scot-free and the appropriate agencies would prosecute them. We promise Nigerians that we will give our best with sincerity of purpose but without caring about the nay Sayers

Joshua, Klitschko set Wembley aglow

IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseeni Joshua, 27, will defend his title against Vladmir Klitschko and bid for the vacant WBA strap in front of a post-war record boxing crowd of 90,000 at Wembley Stadium in just his 19th professional fight.
Klitschko, 41, was unbeaten in 11 years prior to defeat to Tyson Fury in his last fight in November 2015 and says he is “obsessed” with overcoming the Briton.
Joshua’s procession to a world title – captured in just 34 career rounds when he floored American Charles Martin in 2016 – has led to him being installed as odds-on-favourite against Klitschko with bookmakers.
He has contested just 44 rounds as a professional, a tally surpassed by Klitschko in his last five fights alone, with the 41-year-old Ukrainian hardened by 358 rounds as a pro, spanning 68 fights, 64 wins and more than 20 yea

China deports US citizen convicted of espionage

China has deported a US citizen who was convicted of espionage this week after being held without trial for two years, removing a source of friction between Washington and Beijing.
Sandy Phan-Gillis was arrested in March 2015 while about to leave mainland China for the Chinese-ruled, former Portuguese colony of Macau. A court on Tuesday ordered her deportation after sentencing her to three-and-a-half years in prison for espionage.
She left China on Friday from the southern city of Guangzhou and arrived in Los Angeles on the same day, her husband said in a statement.
The Chinese government has not released details of the charges against Phan-Gillis. Her lawyer told Reuters on Tuesday he could not reveal details of the case because it involved “state secrets.”
Her husband, Jeff Gillis, said China had accused Phan-Gillis of visiting the country twice on spy missions in 1996 and working with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation to capture two Chinese spies in the United States and turn them into double agents.
The deportation comes at a time of warming China-US.relations after US President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Florida in early April.
In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Trump called Xi a “good man” and praised him for his efforts to press North Korea to give up its development of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.
An official of the US State Department said it was aware of the deportation.
“The United States welcomes her home,” said the official, who did not want to be identified by name.
Negotiations to secure the release of Phan-Gillis intensified when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited Beijing in March, according to the San Francisco-based Dui Hua Foundation.
“Sandy is overjoyed to be reunited with friends and family, and sends out her thanks to the many people who worked tirelessly for her release,” Gillis said

Will Igbo Language go into extinction? Lets find out

IGBO is one of the four major languages of Nigeria and is said to be a member of the Volta-Niger branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages. It was also discovered that it is spoken by about 18 million people in Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea
However, many people have raised the alarm that there is a gradual extinction of the language. The fear became more pronounced when in 2012, United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) predicted that  “half of the 7000 plus languages spoken today will disappear by the end of the century?” It predicted that Igbo language will become extinct by 2025 if nothing was done to save it.
It is against the afore-mentioned backdrop that some individuals  went to town to seek views of Enugu residents and experts on the matter.
A public commentator/Lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Kindness Jonah, said,  Igbo language extinction is relatively true as it is not quite easy for language to go into extinction except when parents abdicate the speak-ability of the language in their homes. Since language is a purveyor of culture, Igbo language is having problem of relegation from the mainstream of public speeches. At any event or occasion in Igbo town now, the medium of communication is English Language. The worst is our churches where clerics give their sermons in English Language rather than Igbo Language and nobody complains.  Our school system is worst off as medium of communication from primaries  one to six is English Language no mention is made of post-primary institutions. Against this backdrop, one can allude the extinction of Igbo Language.
But on the other way round, since language is a purveyor of culture and for the fact that every clan in Igbo still have its dialect spoken within their domain, we cannot agree to extinction saga even though there is gradual extinction process. Before any language goes extinct, the tribes men must reject the speakability of the language. In Igbo land, many dialects are not spoken publicly with boldness because some adherents feel ashamed to be identified with the dialect. To that extent. The dialect will go extinct if the trend is not reversed. So, presently in Igbo land, smaller dialects are gradually going into extinction.
The coordinator of Romkeep, a human right group,  said that he, together with Professor Peter Ejiofor Foundation, conducted a historical survey of the reasons for the waning of Igbo Language in 2010 and found out that the following steps should be taken to make Igbo Language vibrant again.
One of them is that the system of child naming must reflect cleanish cultures and prevailing circumstance as obtainable in pre-history time of Igbo culture. Every Igbo person must speak his on her dialect boldly and publicly in Igbo land. There must be technical redraft of school curriculum for compulsory speaking of Igbo language in schools in Igbo land. Clerics should deliver their sermons in Igbo language in Igbo land,
For Mazi Frank Afu Kalu the Director of Southeast Operation, Centre for Victims of Extra-judicial Killing and Torture, Enugu, the said extinction is approaching as the alarm was raised about seven years ago when Igbo Language was removed by the London Archives of African Language and removed by Efiks. For instance, “Chiemrie” which means in Igbo Language “God has conquered” is now called “Chimerion”
“The southeast Igbo governors are not doing enough. They established Centre for Igbo Studies in Imo State University, Owerri but at the end of the day poor funding made laudable project to collapse,” Kalu noted.
To Chief Eke Omeje, Igbo Language will not go extinct soon as the language is spoken by individuals who live their entire lives in villages.
Most of the respondents agreed that the solution was for the Igbo governors to have a meeting with Commissioners for Education  in the southeast zone and policy makers to make Igbo language compulsory in secondary schools in Igbo land.
“The governors in Igbo land should declare a state of emergency on Igbo Language. This is imperative because our people no longer bear correct Igbo names,” he opined

Soyinka to Buhari: Make your state of health known to Nigerians

NOBEL Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has lent his voice to the call on President Muhammadu Buhari to make public his state of health.
Soyinka, during a chat with newsmen, on Friday, in Lagos, said the ongoing speculations about the president’s health are “unnecessary”.
The demand by the professor of Comparative Literature was coming on the heels of the persistent failure of the president to appear in public since he returned from his medical trip to the United Kingdom more than a month ago.
Buhari had failed to appear at three consecutive meetings of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), even as he failed to show up at the Juma’at service held inside the Aso Rock Villa, on Friday.
The presidency had tried to explain why he has not been making public appearances.
However, Soyinka, apparently not convinced by the explanation by the presidency, wondered why the president was hiding his state of health, noting that Buhari, as a public figure, should not continue to hide from Nigerians to avoid speculations about his health status.
“Why is the president hiding his state of health? He is supposed to understand he is public property. Me, I am still private property, that’s why I am not in Aso Rock. Once you are in Aso Rock or you occupy a similar position, you have a responsibility to come out frankly to your citizens.
“Guarding your state of health, like Donald Trump [United States president] is guarding his tax returns, is not what we expect from a Nigerian president. Let him address the nation and stop all these speculations which create unnecessary political manipulations, among other things”, he said.
The Presidency had issued a statement on Thursday, dismissing insinuations about the president’s alleged poor health, noting that there was no need for apprehension over his recovery.
Explaining why the president was absent from the FEC meeting, held on Wednesday, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said in a statement that Buhari was acting upon the advice of his doctors to take things slowly.
“President Buhari himself, on his return to the country, made Nigerians aware of the state of his health while he was in London. Full recovery is sometimes a slow process, requiring periods of rest and relaxation, as the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, intimated in his press briefing after the FEC meeting on Wednesday”, he said.

‘Govt must act on herdsmen attacks now’
Speaking on the invasion of his house, the Nobel Laureate said the herdsmen, this time around, came through another path to his doorstep unlike what they did when they invaded the same home last year while he was outside the country.
Soyinka said he was convinced that the recent invasion was a deliberate act of provocation, declaring that it was also a sign that Nigerians were living in dangerous times.
“We are living in dangerous times,” he said, describing the attack as life-threatening and alarming as his home and that of his neighbours were invaded by the herdsmen.
Soyinka, who said he had reported the matter to the police in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, noted that it was sad that the government was doing virtually nothing about incessant herdsmen attacks across the nation as they left behind trails of blood, pains and anguish.
The literary giant said the herdsmen were everywhere now, pointing out that they normally came to territories not as peaceful neighbours but as conquerors.
He stated that it was dangerous when herdsmen began to come to people’s doorstep, especially his home, as such invaders could become potential suicide bombers.
He called on the leadership of the country take steps to stop the incessant attacks from herdsmen. According to him, the time has come to wake up the country’s leadership to take precise action to remedy the dangerous menace of herdsmen with their conqueror’s mentality.
Professor Soyinka lamented the behaviour of the police and other security agencies, saying it was becoming imperative that the citizens should look at how to secure themselves in these dangerous times the country had found itself.
“We need to wake up the leadership, let them know the seriousness of the issue on ground; these sorts of conquerors, these herdsmen are worse than Boko Haram,” he said, adding that some action was required to make the government take drastic action.
Such action, he said, could be abstinence from anything beef in order to draw attention of the leadership to its responsibilities for it to be able to take holistic action about the issue on the ground.
Speaking further, Soyinka frowned at the plan by the government to create a grazing corridor for herdsmen in the country, saying taking such a step would compound the problem on the ground.
“Creating corridor for cattle grazing will compound the problem, I do not think that is the solution,” he said but pointed out that creating ranches for the herdsmen could be part of the solution.”

Revealing Indonesian Beauty Secrets

It’s common knowledge that Indonesian ladies are very concerned about the way they look: the beauty rituals, even the simplest ones like head massage and eyebrow plucking, are performed daily, woman-to-woman in the house or even on the street, while watching tourists passing by or waiting for clients. Local women can be very particular about their beauty: gray hair is removed without any mercy, face masks made of grind herbs are applied at home and the traditional concoction of jamu is consumed religiously for that “female beauty” and “inner glow.” And we haven’t even gotten started about the royal treatments of lulur and boreh—that’s a whole different story, worth a proper article! With all these there is no wonder Indonesian ladies have a special treatment for their…well, cores of femininity. Yes: vaginas.
A Javanese woman is very much concern for her physical appearance to be always slim, beautiful with an alluring bright smiling face. As a Javanese idiom says “Ngadi Sarira” to maintain the body to be always in perfect condition is of prime important. The way of life of a Javanese is greatly influenced by the royal culture. Not surprisingly that the art of “Keeping Beauty’ is originated from the court palaces.

There are many traditional Indonesian remedies and treatments, originating from the practices of ancient Javanese palaces. Here are some Indonesian traditional treatments you can try to pamper yourself:

Why women are more prone to depression

Professor Benedicta Yetunde Oladimeji is a lecturer at the Department of Mental Health, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and a clinical psychologist. The national president, Association of Clinical Psychologists in this interview by TAYO GESINDE speaks on why mental illness may not be cured completely.
Growing up
It was a happy one. I was born in Abeokuta to Christian parents and I attended St Peters Cleaver Primary School, Abeokuta, Ogun State, then, I proceeded to Our Lady of Apostles,  Mary Way Grammar School Odo Ona, Apata, Ibadan. After which I gained admission to study Psychology at the Soviet Union. I came back to work briefly at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan then got a transfer to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. I then went to Wales in (UK) for my PhD. Since, I returned to Nigeria, I have been working at OAU as a lecturer and clinical psychologist and that was where I got my professorship.

Choice of career
I like helping people with their problems and also help them to find solution to them. I am a doctor without injections. Initially, I was working mainly with men because there were no female psychologists then but they were very helpful maybe because of the nature of our work. I didn’t really have any challenge in that regard.

Combining the home front with my career
Combining my career with the home front was a bit of a challenge especially in the area of time management. In the early days, there would be seven o clock lectures in the morning and the children had to be taken care of as well. I had help and support especially from my husband and the house helps. It took me time to complete my PhD and my promotion wasn’t as rapid as it was for men. Because when I was going for the PhD, I took my children with me. So, I was taking care of them, taking lectures and going to library and so on. I was practically on my own because my husband was doing his own thing and even went to London. At a time, I felt I couldn’t cope anymore and wanted to give up because I had a baby then but my husband encouraged me not to quit and suggested that we send the baby to our parents in Nigeria to take care of her so that I could complete my programme. That was what I did that made me to complete the career. I thought I would leave her for a few months but ended up leaving her for two or three years. By the time I came back she didn’t know me. It was quite an ordeal getting her to relate with me and her sisters but we eventually scaled through and I am happy today all of my children are doing well because I was there to monitor and train them. Nowadays, I relax and let their dad do all the running around.

To the glory of God, my parents-in law never put pressure on me. Even when I became worried when I had the last girl, my father-in law phoned and told me not to grumble at what God had given me. He said all I needed to do was to pray and bring them up very well. That removed every fear and anxiety. My girls are like boys in many ways. They taught me how to change tyres when we had a flat tyre while travelling from Ife to Ibadan.  We brought them up to think of themselves as human beings first and foremost. Yes of the female gender but not limited by gender. The oldest is an electrical engineer and the chief executive officer of an international company in Lagos. The second girl is a medical doctor and she is based in Abuja with her husband while the last born went to study Law in Britain and decided to stay there, she only came home to get married and went back.

On today’s women and the challenges of marriage
Today’s women are brought up to think and tackle problems but when it comes to marriage they are told this is your head and you must obey him. Yes, they agree but they are not used to being teleguided. Unfortunately, the boys are not raised up in a way that will help them occupy their rightful position. They want automatic obedience but they don’t know that it has to come gradually and with him showing her with love. For instance, if you both go to work and the girl comes home and prepares food and on getting home, instead of complaining about the food she cooked, thanked her for doing it. Of course, she will feel appreciated. Also, the man should help the woman out in the house.  It is give and take, sharing of responsibility because the head needs the neck to survive. That is why marriages are collapsing. So, parents should start teaching their sons that obedient is not automatic; rather, it comes with some responsibilities on their own part too. Another trend is that many young men today are looking for successful ladies that they will use and dump. I have seen quite a number of that. Really, it is not easy to obey a man but if you love the man you are married to and you know he loves you too, it won’t be too difficult to obey him. It is love that is lacking in many marriages today.

You can't imagine what happened to this baby

A baby was on Thursday found dead inside a refuse sack at a dump site near a market in Alagbado, Lagos State.
The dump site is near the African Independent Television (AIT) Road Market.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who witnessed the incident reports that the dead baby rolled down from the sack as the sack was being dumped into a refuse vehicle.
Refuse collectors saw the baby and raised an alarm.
Market men and women gathered at the scene and ‘rained’ curses on the culprit.
A policeman at the scene told NAN that an investigation would be carried out to find out the culprit.
The policeman from the Alagbado Police Station pleaded anonymity.
The dead baby has been deposited at a mortuary by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
Mrs Omolara Farounbi, the market Iya-oloja (Market Leader), called on traders in the market to be more vigilant.
She said that the perpetrator was able to carry out the act because the traders cleaned up the market and packed refuse for disposal on Friday.
“It was convenient for the person to dump the baby in the sack overnight.
“We have informed the police and called the Lagos State Emergency Maintenance Authority (LASEMA) about the incident,’’ she said
